The Origins Of Father’s Day and When It Is Celebrated

In 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, thought of the idea for Father’s Day while attending a Mother’s Day sermon. She loved him so much and she just wanted her dad to know how special he was to her. Sonora’s father was born in June, so she decided to hold the first Father’s Day celebration on the June 19th, 1910.

In 1956, Father’s Day was recognized by a Joint Resolution of Congress. President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father’s Day in 1972. It was to be held on the third Sunday of June every year. This year it falls on June 15th. So, Father’s Day was started in memory, love and gratitude by a daughter who believed that all good fathers should be honored with a special day.

People celebrate Father’s Day on different days on different parts of the world. While Indians, Americans, English, French, Sri Lankans, Filipinos, Pakistanis, Mexicans, South Africans, Japanese, Irish and Greek celebrate Father’s Day on third Sunday of June(this year it is June 15th), Australians and New Zealanders celebrate on the first Sunday of September.
